cooling fan
 

I have a 2002 saturn sl2, the cooling fan motor will not start. Replace the fan, the switch (sensor) , connector switch, fuse, relay and even the fan connector and does not work to warm up the engine, it only works when I turn on the air conditioner or when "disconnect" the switch. Someone has this happened ?? all new system and not on when heated ?.
Note: The temperature indicator works well.

SO what you are saying is that you replaced the ECTS, its connector, the fan relay, the fuse for the fan, the fan connector at the fan?

The fact that the fan comes on with the A/C means relay and fan are ok.

1)Where did you get the replacement ECTS and connector from?
2)Is the car actually overheating (steaming under the hood, coolant boiling over)?
3)How high does the needle go on the temp gauge before you turn on the AC to engage the fan to cool the engine down?

It's NOT supposed to come on to warm up the engine, it's supposed to come on when the engine gets hot. It's there to cool the engine down, not warm it up. Unless I'm misreading this, seems to me like you spent money for nothing. It's all bass ackwards.

Ok, The ECTC and Connector buy at Autozone, the engine warms to not turn and reaches 1/2 and a little more, when the A / C is turned on the ECTC starts and needle temperature Fail 1/4.

It is common for some s- series saturns to have he temperature gauge go well past 3/4 mark on the temp gauge before the cooling fan kicks in.

I have a had a 92 sl2, currently own a 95sc2 and 97sc2 and they all go to the bottom of the red before kicking on the fan. That is with an ECTS from GM.

Since you did not say your car was actually overheating, let it idle in the driveway, watch the temp gauge, and the fan should kick on around somewhere from he 3/4 to edge of red mark ---or sooner

I suggest you get a brass tipped ECTS and connector from a GM dealer. The autozone ECTsS don't seem to behave the same as the GM part.

Rube---I think it was an issue of how the initial post was worded -- they're just concerned that the fan isn't coming on at the 1/2 way mark......

Yeah, I'm all confused and won't offer any more advice. I'm butting out of this one.

I also, do not know what else to do?

1.buy an ects and connector from a gm dealer. Install them.
2.start the car in your driveway. Let it run. Watch temperature gauge on dashboard.
3. When temperature gauge needle nears 3/4 mark or a little higher, the cooling fan should turn on and cool the engine.

The ects is not a switch, it does not turn on or kick in. The pcm constantly monitors the ects signal and the pcm commands the fan to turn on at the right temperature.

tony , unless your overheating your over thinking it .my fan doesnt come on until the temp gauge reads the half way mark .and that only happens during hot summer days with the air on sitting at idle in traffic .

in other words my fan barely ever runs .

funniest thing though ,it runs more in winter then in summer months .figure that one out .

just drive the car ,if temp gauge never reaches the half mark i wouldnt even give it any thought .
