I own a 97 SC2 and it has been starting up fine and then drives for a few minutes, when it seems to be warmed up the engine quits like it has run out of gas and then stalls ententually when I pull over. We replaced the fuel filter and still nothing. After it quits then has trouble starting again unless it sits for a few hours. I took it to a machanic and they cant find the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions. &lt; =&gt; <!--

After haveing just gone through the exact same thing you are right now, Give this a shot. Replace the crankshaft positioning senser, located on the back of the block just above and to the right of the starter motor. When this sensor starts to go, it allows the motor to start and run till it gets warm then shuts the motor off with no warning and no codes in the computer. This sensor is only about 12 to 15 bucks. Kind of a pain to get at but I'm sure it will fix your problems.[img]smileys/smiley20.gif[/img] MountinAsh.

Based on age of vehicle and assumed mileage to match:



1) replace the coolant temperature sensor -- if it is the
original, it is bad by now. Bogus temp readings to the car's
computer influence many things, including air/fuel mixture, etc.



2) Check EGR valve for sticking. EGR valve issues on
Saturns (in my experinece) seem to flare up only after the engine is
warmed up. You will notice EGR problems mostly during hard accel
and especially on hard decel, as the valve needs to be moving freely
during these times. If it sticks -- espec during decel -- you end
up creating a vacuum "situation" that prevents the air/fuel mix from
getting into the cylinders. And so the car will not start --
until the vacuum situation bleeds away.

That Temperature Sensor makes a huge difference, it affects the Mixture &amp; Timming to name a few. I changed it and made a world of difference in my 97 SC1. My last MPG check was 38.3 on 9-09-05 where before I couldn't get more than about 24 to 25 MPG!

I can tell you my Saturn did the EXACT bs. The solution was simply changing the battery and completely cleaning each battery post clamp. Now hold on, before you discount my advice, I checked the battery myself and it was fine. I checked the post clamps and they too were fine. Turns out, on a Saturn, FINE is not fine. The battery post clamps must make perfect connection to a perfect battery or it will die for no reason over and over and over. If this does not fix it. There is an ignition wire located inside the steering column which is prone to become loose and cause engine stalling and then restart ok.
