96 sl1 burning major oil....help

i noticed a ticking about 2000 miles ago and oil consumption was up to 2 quarts every 500 miles. i had a few people tell me it needed a valve job so i put on a completely remanufactured head including valves seals and cam. it actually got worse with the new head. now blows more smoke and burns 2 quarts every 150 miles, plus it still has the tick that i was told was a burnt valve in the old head. triple checked timing. it has 125k miles. piston rings are my only guess, but looking for any input. thanks.

So who did the wet/dry copression test on this engine before it was tore down. Who didn't replace the timing chain when the engine was tore down.

i did actually replace the timing chain while it was apart, forgot to mention that. and i did the compression test myself. pressure was at about 20 to 30 if i remember right in the very front cylinder. pressure stayed the same both wet and dry. all 3 other cylinders were around 180.
