1996 Saturn L - idle and coolant engine temp problem

Hey,

Car details:
1996 Saturn L
Automatic

So I've had a problem with my Coolant Engine temperature gage for quite some time, but now its worst.

I already change the thermostat and it didn't do anything.

So what happens now is that when i start my car my gage is already at half. It stays there for about 15mins of driving. Then the problems start.

The gage goes up and down and the RPM goes up and down. When I take my foot off the gas it stays at that speed regardless what speed I go at. Even at 80km etc.

The worst part is when im at a stop sign or a red light. The car goes under 1000rpm then almost stalls and starts shaking then revs up to like 4000rpm. It does that until i start moving which is scary cuz i dont want to stall. So to fix that problem I put it in neutral and pump the gas still the light turns green lol.

Any ideas or suggestions on what part to fix?

Hey there Melon --

I think you were pretty close to your problem - so here goes .....

You need to replace the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS) and the wiring connector that attaches to it. Total parts cost about $40usd. The sensor is messed up, and its sending lousy info to the brain of the engine, causing the engine to act screwey. Just make sure the new sensor has a brass tip on it, and use some Teflon tape to install it in the head (right below the thermostat housing). Should fix your problem right up. Good luck
