Hi All,

I've got a 2004 Ion 2 Quad Coupe that I purchased at the end of October
2004. A few weeks ago I had my oil changed at the local Goodyear
and they told me I needed new brake pads, and since my rotors were
rusted so bad they would have to be replaced as well. I was a bit
skepticle so I took it to the Saturn Dealer, and they told me the same
thing. I put about 500 miles a week on the car (50% freeway, 50%
highway, 0% city) so right now it has over 21,000 miles. I don't
think that normal brake rotors should rust that bad in 8 months, and I
don't think the mileage would have any effect on the amount of
rust. I could see if the rotors were warped, or worn out, but I
think it's BS that I have to pay for new rotors 8 months into my new
car because they rusted.

Does anyone think I have any chance of getting some kind of warranty coverage?

I just had a similar thing happen to me. at 15,000 miles my front
rotors were warped and i tried to get the dealership to replace them.
told me not a chance, rotor wear is a "usual maintenance" issue. i'm
sorry, but that's bull. rotors should not warp at all in 15000 miles. i
have a honda that has 180000 miles on it and they've never even been
turned, let alone replaced. anyway... blah blah, saturn warrentee
sucks, blah blah blah...

what to do now? well, brake rotors are supposed to rust. unless you
drive IN the ocean every day, i doubt they're that bad. try taking them
off and into a machine shop and have them give em a whirl. i took mine
in to a local shop, they sandblasted them and turned them for all of
$16 each. matched up with a new set of ceramic pads, i'll have silky
smooth brakes for the next 60k miles for a total of $100. not bad in my
mind.
