Sounds like a problem with the idle air bypass valve being stuck closed. It is easy to replace and cost around $75. It is screwed into the side of the throttle body, is about 1" in diameter and has a 3 wire connector. The throttle body sits on top of the engine and is where the air enters the engine. Go to the parts store and buy the new one and you'll know what it looks like.

99% of the time IAC valve normally sits in the closed position. It slightly opens to allow more air in at a cold start to raise the idle speeds to aid in engine warm up.
