By chance you know how to replace a high pressure AC hose? I had a leak in my high pressure hose now I have the new hose but I know it can be dangerous from what I've read. Do you know how to replace the hose and is it that dangerous to do by myself?

Looks like a couple of bolts to me but then having to pull it off I'm just not sure about the pressure and if there's other things involved I don't know about. Think it's pretty safe?

My friend gave me the gauge so I can put the coolant in the AC hose, is thay very difficult to do?

Since there is a leak in the system, you can change the hose yourself. I'm not a mechanic, but it's my understanding that if you open the system, it will need to be vacuumed for 30 minutes or so to make sure you have the leak fixed. I don't know if you have the proper equipment or not, but doubt it. You can change the hose yourself and then take it somewhere to let them pull a vacuum on it and see if it holds. If so, then you can either choose to let them charge the system for you or try to do it yourself.

 

I agree with rube on this. If you had a leak, then you probably don't have any pressure in the system. You can replace the hose, use new seals, the new hose should come with them. Then get it professionally charged. They will have to put a partial charge with a dye in to check for leaks before they can give it a full charge. It is too easy for an amateur to over charge the system.

You can use your friends gauge to see if there is any residual pressure in the system before you remove the hose.

Also, beware of any pro who says you need a $1000 worth of parts before he can charge the system. If you get one of those, move on to another shop.

No tricks. Just remove all of the bolts holding it on and put the new on one. I do agree with Keith about checking the system first and make sure there is no pressure, otherwise you may get a coolant bath.

 

Do you know how I can check to see if there is pressure in the AC system?

Maybe just take the bults off slowly?

 

You have two ports for gauges on your system, one on the low pressure side and one on the high pressure side. These have caps over them, the low pressure side has the larger cap. If the system has been off for at least a half hour, both sides should have equal pressure. Remove one cap and you will see a schrader valve, just like the one in your tire stem.

You can hook up an AC gauge or just use a small tool to depress the valve. Tire gauge won't fit but you can use the backside of a tire gauge to check for the familiar hiss.

For about $5, you can get new valves and the tool to change them and I would recommend that you do this. Old valves don't always reseal.
