I want to change the shift **** on an SL1 or SL2. will i be able to?

 

I dunno................are you smart enuff to "pull" on the old one till it comes off? I ask because I wonder why you posted this in the detailing (as in car cleaning) area.Edited by: sw2cam

 

I can understand putting it under the detailing section... This type of thing is usually done at the end of a project and it's one of the minor details that just finish a job.


And as an answer to your question (or what I'm assuming it meant): No, you cannot just go to AutoZone and pick up a new shift **** and put it on. You have to replace the entire piece instead of just the ****.

 

Yep, you can go to your local autoparts store and buy a replacement aftermarket ****. I've got one on my 1995 SL2 (All 1991-2002 S-Series Saturns are the same). Just buy one that you slide a threaded trim ring on first, the slide theknob on. At the base of theknob will be three allen head set screws that will secure it to the shaft of the shifter. Then screw the threaded trim ring onto the base of theknob to hide the set screws. This is for a manual transmission, one for automatics are similar.

BTW, the manual shift **** is remove by pulling up on it. Dont hit yourself in the face. Automatic shift ***** come off by remove a small "C" clip located at the forward portion of the nect of the handle.Edited by: Low Saturn

I stand corrected then. I was told that you had to replace the entire shaft and that Saturn made them that way so you'd have to go through the dealership to do any modding. But then again, I didn't double-check with my car to be sure. I like my leather one that came with the car... However I have seen some other leather ones that will look good with the custom leather seats I'm having made... This thread has opened my eyes as to have even more fun...
