Default 1997 SL1 Speedometer problem

I just bought a '97 SL1 w/ 150k. It's a beauty, and I'm very happy to be back in the Saturn family.

The problem I am having is with the speedo. Between 0-40 it works fine, but above that it acts as if it is sticking. Going 50mph will show 45 for a while, then jump to 50. Go to 60 and it will stick a while then jump there. Go to 55 and it may never go down, but go to 40 and it will.

I'm hoping that this would be an easy fix, like a little WD-40, but I get the feeling the speedo will need replacing. The odo and trip odo work normally through all this.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Paxman356 ...

WD-40 will only gum up the meter movement worse. Sewing machine oil would be a much better choice. If you're rich, stop by the dealership and have them replace the speedometer head. If you are more frugal, look around your local u-pull-it yards for a busted-up 97 and swap out the speedometer ...

Another interesting note. If I pound on the dash, oro go over bumps, the speedo will adjust to the correct speed. Also, it seems the tach is also doing the same thing.

It is hard to pull and replace these? Never done it before, but we have two pull-a-part type stores in the area, so I should be able to find the parts.
