Here is one more possibility IF the coil actually has two separate autotransformers, that is two primaries and two secondaries with a center ground for all coils. The firing of the coil is still done by interrupting the ground lead by the PCM. The test is simple, you need to identify the wires that provide 12V to the primary of the coils and check each for voltage.

If I recall correctly, the coils mount into a mount that holds the connectors for the primary sides of the coils, but if perchance there is a wiring harness that goes to each coil, then disconnect the harnesses and swap them, leaving the coil in place. That will move the dead cylinder, but IIRC, you cannot do this.

You will need a wiring diagram from the FSM to figure out which pins on the connector should have 12v on them. Information like this is simply not available on our "information super highway".
