Default 92 SL fan stays on while driving

my cooling fan starts shortly after i start driving and stys on until i turn the car off. the temp gauge is in the normal range so i dont think its a temp issue. the gauge goes up slowly until it reaches normal operating temp. its been this way for a few weeks and has not overheated.

i know it should only turn on with the a/c or to cool the engine when the gauge goes over the normal range.

what could be the cause?

thanks

ECTS (coolant temp sensor) is likely bad
I'd normally consider that the fan relay might be stuck closed, but since the fan doesn't come on right away, I'll shy away from that.

The ECTS It is a two wire device located in the cylinder head, passenger side
The dash gauge is a separate one (single wire device) on the older S cars, so you wont see the misbehavior of the ECTS on the dash gauge.

Source the ECTS and connector (yes, replace this too) from a GM dealership; $40.
Connector is a squeeze connector
