94 SC2 transmission fluid change?
#1
I'm a month away from a 2500+ mile move. I'm planning on driving my '94 Saturn SC2 DHOC, <a itxtdid="5659237" href="forum_posts.asp?TID=3142&PN=1#" style="font-weight: normal ! important; font-size: 100% ! important; text-decoration: underline ! important; padding-bottom: 1px ! important; background-color: transparent ! important;" classname="iAs" class="iAs">auto</a>
trans, 99k. My dad and I are arguing about the maintenance that should
be completed before the long drive, specifically, what to do with the
transmission fluid.I bought the <a itxtdid="5659229" href="forum_posts.asp?TID=3142&PN=1#" style="font-weight: normal ! important; font-size: 100% ! important; text-decoration: underline ! important; padding-bottom: 1px ! important; background-color: transparent ! important;" classname="iAs" class="iAs">car</a>
used a year ago with 93k miles. I've not changed the transmission fluid
since buying it, and the color leads me to believe it hasn't been
changed in a long time (60k+ probably). The transmission currently
shifts up and down just fine, no slips, hesitation, or clunking. I will
not do a transmission flush, but what are your thoughts on completing a
fluid drain/refill and filter change on a higher mileage vehicle when
the fluid has not been touched in so long? Thanks.

Just change it. It can hurt. The damage has been done. The manual recommends changing the fluid/filter every 30,000 miles. But even that is not often enough for these transmissions. I change the auto tranny fluid every 6000 to 8000 miles with a flush every 12,000 to 16,000 miles. I also add an external cooler.
