It means the engines computer operated management system has detected a problem and has set an error code. When an error code is set, the service light turns on.Take the car to Auto Zone, Advanced Auto etc. They will scan the car for free and tell you the error codes that were set. Let us know and we can point you in the right direction as to what might be causing the error codes.

Service light (with the wrench) or Service Engine Soon light?

Paulorlo's response is for the Service engine soon light....I don't believe the one with the wrench sets ODBII diag codes......

i am at 61,120 miles--2002 saturn sl2.
thanks for your help.
let me know what you think....

The service (wrench) indicator is turned on by the cluster when it
receives a command from the body control module (BCM). The engine
control module (ECM) or BCm will turn the service indicator on for all
non-emission related diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) that require that a
indicator be turned on ( some DTCs do not turn on a indicator but are
stored to aid in diagnosis).

Thus, the wrench means there is a problem. Not serious enough to turn
on the service engine soon light, but a non-emission related problem.
that has a trouble code. It is not something they have to duplicate to
find the problem. The code tells them what the problem was.</span>

THank you for your explanation.

I have another question for you.

I was told that Saturn cars can only be fixed at Saturn Dealerships...is this true?

I bought it "used" locally this past May and have had the battery go out on it and a BCM? or RCM? replacement, which was done at the Saturn dealership...and thats it...other than the problem that has arisen this past week with the wrench popping up on the dash....do you think that this "wrench" issue needs addresssed asap or is it not really a big deal? thanks for your time!

Wrong...Saturns CAN be fixed by anybody...Saturn only have more experienced techs that are more familiar with problems on their vehicles. You must have your vehicle check if your service wrench telltale comes on...It can be anything from low coolant to tranny problem. Another things is thatthere is a BodyDTC stored in the BCM so if they tell you there is no code, they are blowing smoke.

My owners handbook says to take the vehicle in for service as soon as possible. Wheather you take it to a Saturn dealer or a trusted garage that you have done business with in the past is your call.
