I own a 2001 sl 1 with a 5 speed. The problem I'm
having is when I push the cluch in to shift gears the
engine rpm takes an excessively long time to wind
down which makes shifts a little awkward. I have to
hold the cluch pedal down and wait for the engine to
slow before releasing it. I also have noticed when
the speed sensor detects the car is not moving I can
hit the gas then quickly let off the accellerator and the
rpm drops immediatly like it should. As soon as the
car is rolling a mile or two an hour the idle speed
goes up automatically to 1100 rpm . If I hit the gas
with the car in neutral and its rolling then let off, idle
speed is slow to come down. My Sl 1 has done this
since I bought it last spring. Is this normal for this car
or is something messed up ?

It's a little disappointing to hear that this is normal.
Yours Saturn does this too? I was thinking of
unplugging either the IAC or the speed sensor just to
mess around with it . I was also thinking of test
driving a similar car at a dealer but then I would have
to waste half a day B...S...ing a salesman. Thanks

I'd check for a vacuum leak some where it takes alittle while longer to idle down than most cars but shouldn'r impair your shifting that sound's like it is ilding too high perhaps.





Also try taking out the IAC and giving it a good cleaning with a tooth brish and some parts cleaner.

I agree. Also when the vehicle is in neutral it is going to take a little more time to come down cause it has no load. But it shouldn't take that much more time.

When my engine coolant sensor was providing incorrect info to thecomputer Inoticed that my 97 sl1 was surging to 1500 right after the car started rolling. I played around with a potentiometer that had a range of 4500 to 200 ohms connected to the wires that normally connect to the coolant sensor. According to the service manual 180 F is about 300 ohms and 200 F is about 200 ohms.


I set the "pot" for 250 and tried it out. My surging subsided dramatically. I'm suggesting that either your engine isn't coming up to about 190 F (maybe thermostat stuck open) sensor, or connections, are causing a higher than normal resistance at normal temp which in turn tells computer that you haven't warmed up yet.


Maybe a stretch. Its amazing how well it settles down when the computer gets correct temp info.

Try changing your PVC and fuel filter. I changed those on my 93 SL and it fixed my idle problem
